The United Nations: a Spiritual Perspective
But--speaking symbolically--when the United Nations
has emerged into factual and actual power, the welfare of the world will
then be assured. What is that welfare but love in action? What are right
human relations but love among men, groups and nations? What is international
cooperation but love on a world scale? Those are the things which… we
are working here today to bring into being. We are attempting to do it
on a vast scale, and this in spite of opposition--an opposition which
can only temporarily succeed, such is the potency of the awakened spirit
of man. These are the things which the Hierarchy, in its already successful
procedures, is aiding and will continue to aid.
The Externalisation of the Hierarchy,
p. 602
At this time of its sixtieth anniversary, the United Nations remains the
best vehicle we have for the realization of our vision for a better world.
The blueprint of that vision is contained within its Charter and the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights. These documents spell out the principles of
freedom and a world at peace and delineate the steps that the nations of
the world must take in order to make them possible. So while it often seems
that humanity is much more concerned with the machinations of war than
with the difficult compromises of peace, it is helpful to remind ourselves
of the ideals contained within the U.N.’s founding principles and
to do all we can to support its work.
In the writings of Alice Bailey the United Nations is described as a “point
of tension” that “will eventually prove to be the agent that
will bring about a ‘point of emergence’” for humanity
as a whole. In the law of cycles that governs all spiritual work (for an
individual, a group or a nation) there are three consecutive stages: crisis,
tension and emergence. It is during the stage of crisis that decisions
are made—either voluntarily or involuntarily. If the decisions are
in alignment with the intentions of the soul, they lead to the attainment
of a point of tension. The point of tension results from the achievement
of an alignment within consciousness, and a process of inner listening
unfolds and the individual or group proceeds under soul direction. When
this work is done properly while the point of tension dominates, the right
conditions are created that lead eventually to the point of emergence. “This”,
Alice Bailey writes, “is both an emergence from and also an emergence
into a field of experience.” This point of emergence today, relates
to humanity’s willingness to take those steps that will allow our
civilization as a whole to move outward from the confines of the past and
into alignment with the new energies that are presently coming into manifestation.
The United Nations stands at a central point within that worldwide serving
group known as the new group of world servers and, as a consequence, is
powerfully governed by these cycles of crisis, tension and emergence. The
U.N. emerged out of the ashes and eventual triumph of the Allied forces
during World War II--the greatest period of pain and crisis ever to confront
humanity. From the perspective of the Ageless Wisdom teachings, this victory
signaled a major spiritual breakthrough for humanity and a turning point
in the evolutionary development of planet Earth. The U.N. was, in a certain
sense, the accolade accorded to humanity as a result of that victory. The
point of tension has governed its work for all these sixty years, as it
plans, struggles and attempts to hold to the vision of a better world despite
the difficulties pressing in upon it from all sides. But as mentioned above,
from this point a great emergence becomes possible.
This places a great responsibility as well as a great opportunity upon
the work of the U.N.
There is a sense among many people within the spiritual community that
the decisions made by the U.N. and the resultant creation of this “point
of emergence” for humanity as a whole will be instrumental in preparing
the way within human consciousness for the reappearance of the World Teacher.
For this Teacher cannot appear until and will not reappear until humanity
consciously aligns itself with the intentions of the divine Plan. We’re
told that there are three primary requirements that humanity must fulfill
in order for this long-awaited event to be realized within the world: the
institution of the principle of sharing has to be en route to governing
global affairs; the political and religious institutions of the world have
to be in process of cleaning house; and there must be a movement towards
the establishment of a measure of peace and security within the world.
In relation to the realization of these three requirements it might be
useful to review the Preamble to the U.N. Charter which reads:
WE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED
to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in
our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and
to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth
of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations
large and small, and
to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations
arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained,
and
to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
AND FOR THESE ENDS
to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as
good neighbours, and
to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and
to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods,
that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and
to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and
social advancement of all peoples,
HAVE RESOLVED TO COMBINE OUR EFFORTS TO ACCOMPLISH THESE AIMS
Accordingly, our respective Governments, through representatives assembled
in the city of San Francisco, who have exhibited their full powers found
to be in good and due form, have agreed to the present Charter of the United
Nations and do hereby establish an international organization to be known
as the United Nations.
It becomes vividly clear from a study of these words (which are expanded
in the subsequent 19 chapters of the full text of the Charter) that they
provide the blueprint for the realization of the requirements for the World
Teacher’s return. It’s unfortunate then that the promise contained
within these powerful words still seems so far from realization sixty years
on. Economic reform, through such measures as the Millennium Goals is in
process of working out but great vigilance is needed to assure that the
actions taken within the United Nations are free from outside corporate
influence and in full alignment with its founding principles. There are
many entrenched forces that are conspiring to hold humanity back from the
realization of the Aquarian age ideals of liberty, equality and brotherhood
among all peoples and all nations of the world. Separativeness, selfishness,
and materialism remain the line of least resistance for the human kingdom
but we can each accept responsibility and play out part to collectively
change this situation.
And political and religious reform could eventually become a greater part
of the U.N.’s work—indeed they are spelled out in so many words
in the Charter and The Declaration of Human Rights. There can be no human
rights if the people of the world continue to suffer at the hands of corrupt
political and religious institutions. Interestingly enough, the debate
over aid for the poor nations (specifically the African nations), has served
to throw the endemic political corruption into sharp relief. For it is
this corruption that presently blocks so much of that aid from reaching
those for whom it was intended. The pressure will now be on for governments
to clean house and the people of the world will be able to demand it.
The third requirement is the taking of concerted steps towards the establishment
of a world at peace. In a way, this was the primary intention for which
the U.N. was created but it was pushed aside as a result of the Cold War
which was almost immediately replaced by the war on terror. There is a
spiritual principle that states that often the most effective means of
resolving and problem is by building in its opposite quality. And since
war is so often related to aggression and to the taking of that which is
not one’s own, it would seem that its opposite would be to focus
upon the principle of sharing—thus bringing to full circulation the
delicate interrelationship between the three preparatory steps for the
Teacher’s return. In the Alice Bailey teachings it states, “Peace
will be the result of understanding and sharing, and not the origin of
them as the pacifists so often imply.” As the countries of the world
come together to readjust the present economic imbalances it will become
starkly apparent that their goals can only be effectively realized by diverting
some of the present $960 billion that is spent annually upon weapons into
the meeting of the MDG’s (Millennium Development Goals) and other
development projects. Perhaps it is the successful resolution of this issue
could prove to be the true “point of emergence” for humanity
as a whole.
The fact that the U.N. is located within the city of New York is spiritually
significant. According to the teachings of the Ageless Wisdom, New York
is one of what is called the “five planetary centers”--along
with London, Geneva, Darjeeling and Tokyo. These centers, or “chakras”,
are the points for the inflow and distribution of energy that animates
the life of the planet as a whole. New York, because of its strategic position
as the central point within these five centers (which upon the etheric
planes constitute two intersecting triangles), holds a position of tremendous
influence within the planet. This is surely the reason why it is situated
here.
We are now entering into a most interesting period within the evolutionary
development of our planet and all its life forms as the planetary centers
are beginning to thrill in response to the increased vibratory rate that
is developing within the life of that great Life “in Whom we live
and move and have our being.” Naturally this vibration would be most
heightened within the planetary centers and this cannot help but have a
powerful effect upon the U.N. and its work.
Each planetary center has a keynote and is colored by a particular ray
energy. New York’s keynote is “I light the way”, which
is also the keynote for the entire United States and its ray influence
is that of the sixth ray. Indeed it was primarily the vision of President
Franklin D. Roosevelt that proved the catalyst that gave birth to the United
Nations. And the Tibetan said that this lighting of the way could be “the
privilege of the States if its people so chose and permit worldwide humanitarian,
self-sacrifice and a firm decision to stand by righteousness to govern
their present attitudes and policies.” It’s said that one day
the political power base within the United States will shift from Washington,
D.C. to New York, as the soul of the nation comes more prominently into
play. This shift would benefit both the USA and the U.N. and aid in the
realization of the intentions contained within the keynote, using the energy
within this center to increasingly become a dynamic force for change and
forward movement within the planet.
All concerned citizens of the world could work subjectively to help both
the United States and, as a consequence, the United Nations to realize
the goals contained within the New York keynote. And in order to accomplish
this, the United States must move forward into the light of its second
ray soul and use its strength and wisdom to subordinate its sixth ray personality
that is presently seeking to make it a vehicle for the retrogressive forces
of involution within the life of the planet. The sixth ray influence of
the New York planetary center cannot help but have a powerful impact upon
the U.N. as well.
The Ancient Wisdom teaches that the rays cycle in and out of manifestation
on a rotating basis and at the present time the energy of the sixth ray
is rapidly passing out. And whenever a ray energy begins its waning process
its higher qualities begin to crystallize and take on a negative and entrenched
condition. Those people who are more conservative by temperament have a
tendency to cleave deeply to the structures of the past. And when such
people are actively controlling the life of a nation or an organization,
it becomes difficult for it to move forward into alignment with the new
and progressive energies. In the case of the sixth ray, the “lower” qualities
that need to be guarded against are suspicion, paranoia, fundamentalism,
over-emphasis upon personal loyalty, and narrow vision. The U.N. could
not help but be caught up in some of the difficulties incident upon the
outgoing of this sixth ray energy because of its very location within the
planet. There are a number of groups that are working spiritually to help
the U.N. realize its goals within the planet through focused, subjective
work. We hope that you will choose to join in these efforts so that together
we can see the realization of a strong and vibrant United Nations, one
that will provide that “point of emergence” for which all men
and women of goodwill long.

- The new group of world servers was a term coined by the Tibetan teacher
who wrote a series of 20 books with Alice Bailey between the
years 1919-1949. This is an international group of individuals
whose lives and work are dedicated to meeting human and planetary
need at this time of transition into a new age. They work in all the
many different fields of endeavor but they are primarily the forward-looking
individuals who are bridging between the old and new forms and
ideas that will help to “prepare
the soil” of the planet for the coming externalization of the
