All around the world the problems with human health, healthcare and healing are issues that people are considering in various ways.  Some are directly involved with their own health problems; others are concerned for the health of others in their lives; and others are interested in the mysteries and hidden potentials and the ways that can be used for bringing about healing, perhaps as an art.

Long experience (81 years) of excellent health has allowed some perspective on illness and healing that might escape those who are all wrapped up in their own health problems, or of those in their environment. My first question to anyone who is thinking of becoming a “healer” is, “Why?”  The motivations can be varied and hold the essential key to success or failure. It is a serious question.  To be truly successful, one must understand much more than processes.

There are so many various types of illness.  Some human beings are destined from birth to have illness that will lead to their demise. No healer should interfere beyond helping those persons find spiritual strength to meet their destiny as painlessly and gracefully as possible.  Then there are those who can be helped, who cannot help themselves without assistance and whose conditions are subject to a knowledgeable “healer’s” useful energies.

To begin with, one who might be called a “healer” must have some study of the causes and nature of most human ills.  That requires study of anatomy and also how the body works, aside from the levels of cause which must be discerned.  Also, if a healer is not aware of all subtle levels of consciousness and the energy centers in the human body, there is little hope for his or her patients having all the assistance possible.  It is not enough to simply “hope” the patient will get better with a meditative spirit.

The three areas of life or health in the physical body are the respiratory system, the circulatory system and the nervous system.  Before any attempt to help a “patient” recover, there must be an understanding of which of these areas is affected and in what way.

It is much easier to be healthy, and stay healthy, than to allow illnesses to enter in and try to manage them.  So I would say a few words about that before going into what must be done by a “healer.”

Each of us starts with some “givens.”  We have inherited the tendency to disease from our families.  It is wise to discover whether a patient has a relatively healthy background or a family full of inclinations toward specific diseases and illnesses.  One can make great changes from the first if there is some understanding of the necessities.  During every seven year period, we renew the cells in our bodies.  That is spectacularly useful information!  It means that within a seven year period, one might build a physical body in complete cooperation with the natural processes of health—and keep it that way.  Attention must be paid to each of the three areas—breath, blood and the nervous system.

All three of them depend greatly upon the consciousness of the individual.  If one is beginning with an infant, the consciousness can be trained for health.  An extraordinary feat is to inculcate the idea of “I will be well” into any child OR oneself.  Those fortunate enough to have that as a natural condition of thinking will be among the healthiest persons on earth.  “I will be well,” is an exceptionally powerful magnet in each area of the three systems.  It is also the Esoteric Key to the ancient Ayruvedic Philosophy of Health.

“You will be well,” however, as is the notion of the “healer,” is another matter altogether.

When an individual’s life stands on the will to be well, it stems from some motivation for the use of life.  That will depend upon the experience of the soul in previous incarnations.  To be well in order to serve efficiently is probably the highest and most magnetic motivation for good health that can be held.  It will not be incongruent with moderation in all things, therefore not given to fanatical attempts to stay healthy, which naturally—lead to illness.

But there are contingencies which must be realized and attended to, in any case.  If a person indulges in certain habits of thought, word or deed, which are known to be destructive of their bodily systems, they invite illness and will inevitably pay the price.  This is often done in ignorance.  This is where the healer or doctor might be consulted.  But which system is affected, and by what consciousness and behavior?

What has brought about the existing disease in the patient? Healing will require changes on the part to the patient, regardless of the work of the healer, if the patient is to remain or become vitally healthy.

Examine the physical body and how it is attended with food, and rest. Diet can play a great part in many ills.  Then, what is the emotional life of the patient? This question is very important and the answer must be sought through various means.  One way would be through direct questioning, but another is to sense the quality of the glands and the centers in the body. If a healer cannot do this, the work will be partial at best, and probably incorrect.

All healing work must be in cooperation with the soul of the patient. Any other consideration is, in effect, evil.  This is a hard statement, but true, and the healer bears responsibility for allowing egocentric personality desiring to be a “healer” to overwhelm the realities of life and the evolutionary process regarding an individual’s suffering illness.

Neither is it sufficient to say or think, “If it be Thy will,” and then demand results through the combined efforts of a “healing” group.  Most healing groups haven’t the vaguest notion of what would be required for the true healing of the patients they “experiment” on.  “Let us put our heads together and help the suffering.” What a magnificent, motivating, attracting force to participate! But, this will require long study and change in the individual lives before the group is capable to truly put their “heads” together—and will demand their “hearts” as well.

The group must precede any attempt to help a patient with a period of complete purity in thought, word and deed.  In other words, they must have soul contact at will, if they are not soul-infused workers, and should disqualify themselves from healing work if they have not these capabilities—until they do.

So, a healing group must have soul contact to work.  They must know where the patient stands on the ladder of evolution.  Someone among the group MUST have the esoteric sense to know.  If this is not happening, they can experiment, and can have a measure of success, depending upon their own purity, and their ability to unify with the soul of the patient before they invoke the healing formula for the specifics.  That person will be aware of the condition of the energy centers in the body.

After consultation among themselves as to the correct procedure for healing; the areas needing adjustment; the group, after individual preparation in purity, can come together with the patient’s permission or request, and move forward with a formula for altering the flow of forces and energies within the vehicles of the patient.

The period of preparation in purity might call upon group members to fast from food, or to meditate for a few days in complete silence.  If it is an emergency, the group will need to override any present gross force (which will be obstacles to their ability to channel soul energy).  That is more easily considered than done, since the member’s own health is actually in the balance when this is the case. If there is undue stress being borne by a group member, that member should not participate in the healing work.

Cleanliness of body, emotion and thought are prerequisites for healing. There are natural conditions of health to which everyone is subject and are usually met only partially.  The world in which we live today is full of toxins to which everyone is exposed. Life, itself, presumes a toll on the “equipment” of each individual.  To remain immune, one must attend to some extent on ways to enhance the immune system with supplements, since there is little means to acquire food in its pure and natural state. It would be tantamount to intense selfishness to spend the time required to stay perfectly removed from the toxicity of the world.  Therefore, this is done by disciples only to the extent necessary to remain in the health of mind and body to do the Service one has incarnated to do.

Most healing groups are “playing with the fires” of life. They consist of well-meaning grossly constructed individuals (physically, emotionally, mentally) and expect their good intentions and sympathy or compassion for the ill, to be enough to override the fact of their ineptitude.  They do not realize they are dangerous, very dangerous. Their glamour about it, and lack of knowledge, can increase the very ills they intend to inhibit or destroy.

The soul is the only true healer.  Illness and diseases might give way to medical interference and bring a kind of normalcy, but the persons involved have not been “healed” in the true sense of the word.  They are not in control of their health until they are in control of their physical appetites, in control of their desire nature, and their thoughts are enlightened by the soul.  This takes place in the normal course of evolution. It can take place more rapidly on the path of discipleship and initiation.

One soul-infused disciple, in the light of the soul, is a natural healer. His/her presence IS healing.  If she/he hears of an illness, on any level, there is an automatic outpouring of soul energy toward the suffering.  It cannot be withheld. Those who are interested in healing as a way of life, need to know more. They need to know exactly how the energy moves, how to invoke and evoke the proper amounts of force and energy for the particular person or persons involved.  A study of the seven rays will be imperative at some point.

AN EXAMPLE

For an example of the successful and direct use of healing energy by a disciple, let us use a hypothetical and simple situation where a person is suffering from an infection of the lungs, causing pneumonia.

The disciple knows that this infection might have been avoided had the person been able to build an immune system in which the offending bacteria could not flourish.  There is no time to achieve this in the present condition of emergency, however. The disciple, first of all, must discern whether the patient is intended to leave incarnation. This is done through a rapid esoteric “look” at the life processes of the patient. The ability to do this is dependent upon a consciousness of such complete love and unity, that there can be no judgment whatsoever, outside of what is necessary for helpful adjustment.  There are two possibilities: either the patient will recover to renewed life on the physical plane, or will discard the body and move on. Let us assume the disciple “sees” that the life in this case is intended to achieve further activity.

To move past the immediate crisis, great amounts of energy must be invoked to overcome the infectious bacteria.  After due preparation in meditation, the disciple merges consciousness with the patient and “breathes” for and with the patient, along with every breath, “seeing” or visualizing the energy of the soul burning out the infectious bacteria in the lungs and bringing freedom of the breath.  This breathing involves a direct sensing of the patient’s lungs holding the same health as the lungs of the disciple and having the same strength—as if it were within the SAME body.  This is a concentrated effort without respite until all infection is gone, the breathing is clear, normal, and the healing is complete.  (In this example, there is no reference to the centers of the patient and their condition, of which the disciple becomes aware—the process is accurately described for the hypothetical situation and patient).

Afterward, the disciple relaxes the concentration and leaves the patient’s equipment to complete the natural recovery on its own.  From this healing procedure, there has been a depletion of the disciple’s own immune system which must be built up through solitude and meditation.  The disciple knows how this is done, and accomplishes it forthright.

There is not better instruction for healing than the book Esoteric Healing by the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul, over the name of Alice A. Bailey, published by Lucis Publishing Company in New York.
