Evolution of the Races and the Astrology of Nations: Part Two

In the “quintessential” expression of the race, the Fifth Ray of Concrete Science also has a powerful influence; especially through a lesser known Ray Five cycle(1) of the past 120 years ending in 1999:

Under the law of evolution likewise, the mind, being the fifth principle, the fifth root race must be intimately concerned with it, and its corresponding fifth subrace more intimately than any other. Students would do well to bear in mind the following correspondences:

DK makes another ambiguous statement above in that “fifth subrace” is given as “Anglo-Saxon.” Technically, “Anglo-Saxon” is “fifth branchrace.” If the proposition put forward earlier applies, the above tabulation would read subrace instead of rootrace and branchrace instead of subrace.

As earlier pointed out, the Fifth (Anglo-Saxon) Branchrace is a microcosm of the Fifth Subrace, of the Fifth Rootrace. In the following quote, the words “fifth root race” and “Aryan race” are used in the same sentence. Although it seems to be a qualifying statement, it can be read as “fifth root race/fifth subrace (Aryan)”:

What is the effect of this ray upon humanity as a whole and at this time?The effect of these influences is very great and of supreme importance in this fifth root race, the Aryan race, in this second solar system.Again, you can see the clarity of the correspondences that are emerging.I would have you note them again.

1. Ray II, the Ray of Love-Wisdom; and Ray V, the Ray of Concrete Knowledge or Science.

3. The second solar system of love; and the fifth root race, the Aryan race, of active intelligence. (3)

Let me also make one definite statement at this point which may cause some surprise. The fifth kingdom in nature, the spiritual, will emerge out of the fifth root race.Such is the esoteric control of the Law of Correspondence.(4)

The fifth kingdom is of course the ‘kingdom of souls’, which will manifest with great power in the coming Aquarian Age, influenced strongly by the Fifth Ray.

The fifth root race marks a point where higher and lower manas approximate, and where the concrete mind, meeting its highest development of this round, gives place to the intuition from above. (5)

As there are two more rootraces remaining in this (Fourth) Round, it is highly significant, as a round is of immense duration.

The fifth principle of manas is at this time beginning to demonstrate mainly through the seventh type of force … this incoming Ray [7th] is peculiarly situated at this time, and that its influence will be manifested under very favorable conditions.It is pouring its force out upon the seventh plane, the physical, during the Fifth Rootrace and the fifth subrace, and consequently the opportunity is great.”(6)

“A great part of the fifth root-race, three-fifths perhaps, stand close to the Probationary Path, and with the coming in of the new age and the advent of the Christ in due time and in His own place (note the care with which I express this; dogmatic assertions in terms of men's concrete minds are inadvisable) many will find it possible to make the adequate extra effort, entailed in the taking of the first major Initiation.They will begin to pass from the fifth to the fourth plane.The Lord of Fire will achieve his peculiar work for this cycle by arousing the fire of kundalini in the large numbers of those who are ready. This will be begun in this century, and carried forward actively for the next one thousand years. (7)

Today in our Aryan age and race, we see the vital expression of this fifth ray energy.When I use the word "race" I deal not with man-made or pseudo-scientific differentiations of nations and races or types.I deal with a state of consciousness which is the Aryan or mental consciousness or state of thinking; this finds its exponents and its "race members" in every nation, without any distinction or omissions.This I would have you carefully remember, for there is no new race in process of appearing, from the territorial angle; there is only a general distribution of those persons who have what have been called the sixth root race characteristics.This state of consciousness will find its expression in people as far apart racially as the Japanese and the American or the Negro and the Russian.It posits an ability to function with clarity upon the mental plane, to collate information, rightly to interpret and relate that information, and to create the needed thoughtforms or concepts for those interpretations.

These thoughtforms fall into three major fields of thought or thoughtform areas of consciousness:

1. Science. Under this word I include all that which the educational processes cover or are supposed to cover, and such a useful science as medicine.

3. Psychology, with its effort to account for humanity and to discover what man is essentially and how he functions. (8)

In all these basic relationships, that which is the fifth in order is destined to be the instrument, the vehicle or the implementing factor for the second.The Universal Mind, as it works through all the planes of our conscious planetary life, is the creative agent and the form-building factor which makes the revelation of love possible.(9)

The West is at the apotheosis of the Fifth Rootrace and if it is near halfway (10,000 years) into the Fifth Branchrace, then a minor Ray Five cycle over most of the twentieth centuryis timely for the “Lord of Fire” to do his work.

The fifth zodiacal sign, Leo, takes Ray Five through it and rules over the First Initiation. It is therefore appropriate that as we enter the Aquarian Age (polar opposite to Leo), that many of Humanity will take the opportunity proffered by Saturn, ruler of the first decanate of Aquarius. Saturn is also ruler of the Ray Three cycle within which the Ray Five cycle occurs. Three fifths of the Fifth Rootrace on the Probationary Path is an extraordinary figure and probably unprecedented in the history of the planet.

The past Piscean Age of religious doctrines, dogmatic theology and the awakened Christ consciousness of Leo recalls:

It is this identification which results in the theological differences, and the doctrinal and sectarian diversities everywhere to be found, and in this fifth root race and particularly in this fifth subrace this identification reaches its apotheosis.It is the era of the personal self, not of the spiritual Self. (10)

The period between egoic Cycles.Herein is hid the mystery of the 777 incarnations and concerns the relation of the unit to his group on the egoic plane, prior to the unfoldment of the fifth petal.It concerns man in the period between the savage stage and that of the disciple, when he is an average man but still in the two Halls. (11)

He must work upon the unfoldment of the fifth and sixth petals ... He must strive to bring about a stabilisation of both the astral body and the mind, and must aim at that emotional equilibrium which is produced by the conscious "balancing of forces. (12)

This points to the dual task of Leo, control of the astral and mental bodies, and of Libra, the balancing of forces and that which conditions the reversal of the wheel:

It might then be possible to discover whether the particular life in which a man carries forward the process of reversal may not perhaps be one in which the sun is in Leo, with Libra rising. (13)

... the Piscean Age which is passing and that of Aquarius which is coming in—Libra will eventually rule, and the end of this century will see the influence of Libra steadily coming into pronounced control and into a position of power in the planetary horoscope. (14)

There is proven here that the influences of Leo and Libra are prominent within the planetary horoscope and are enabling a large proportion of humanity to take the First Initiation:

... the influences of Sirius, Leo and Uranus has been much needed at this time to foster and bring about those conditions which will enable mankind ... to take the first initiation and "give birth to the Christ," ... It is in Leo that man undergoes the preparatory stages of this first initiation ... This cycle of experience is followed by a painful life of conscious re-orientation—a cycle wherein he achieves balance [Libra]... the ordeal and the accolade of fire, preceding the first initiation. At that final stage, Humanity today stands. (15)

It is argued by some esoteric astrologers that the Sun is in Leo, not its polar opposite Aquarius, because of our illusory way of geocentrically looking at precession. Hence it can be deduced from these statements that for the Earth zodiac, the Sun is actually in Leo, with Libra rising – hence the requirements are there for Humanity taking the First Initiation

America was first officially colonised in 1620, although by that time she had been ‘discovered’ for over a century. This is an important time in history, during the Renaissance period, and just before the deaths of King James I and Francis Bacon in 1625, when a truly democratic parliament was starting to emerge, as a force with which the Monarchy had to reckon.(16)

These two systems of government mark a major change of ray energies, if Monarchy is viewed as Ray One, Democracy Ray Two, and Communism Ray Three. (17)

1575 AD marked the start of a cycle of Ray Two of Love Wisdom(18) which had waxed stronger by the 1620’s AD, when the Ray Two soul of America was incarnating i.e. colonising the continent.

1625 AD saw the rapid passing out of Ray Six of Devotion or Abstract Idealism that had characterised the whole Age of Pisces. Ray Six is America’s personality ray, therefore the new land was to embody the best ideals and aspirations of the outgoing Ray Six cycle, and develop from its soul perspective the qualities of Ray Two.

Ray Six rules religion, and the Pilgrims and Puritans of the New World experienced a religious freedom denied them in the Old Country. The resonance of Ray Six with this new Sixth Branchrace is an important consideration, particularly if we go back to the start of the Age of Pisces

As California is occultly considered to be the one of the seed areas for the coming Sixth Subrace, it is interesting that she was explored and colonised by the Spanish, who are a Ray Six soul.

Mother country Britain is also a Ray Two soul, an old soul as nations go, and as this is a “Love-Wisdom” solar system, embodies some of the highest ideals of humanity, such as freedom, democracy and loving service.

At the same time it must be remembered, Britain was also colonising India in the 1600’s, as well as Canada from 1608 - she was expanding in all directions at the start of the Ray Two cycle. Britain was undergoing an initiation of sorts, and the opening of her lotus sent seeds throughout the world. This expansiveness is an apt keyword for the two planetary rulers of Ray Two, the Sun and Jupiter:

[The] Law of Expansion is limited to the discussion of the seven Rays and ... planetary initiations ... we are dealing with the expansions of consciousness of a Planetary Logos through the medium of a) The chains. b) The rounds. c) The kingdoms of nature. d) The root races.(19)

America was the first nation of the Sixth Branchrace and may embody the ‘first aspect’ relating to the triangle of Australia and New Zealand. The Sixth Subrace may well have been inaugurated at the time of Christ, corresponding with the Sixth Ray dispensation, but probably was well and truly underway with the settlements of America, Australia and New Zealand.

Looking at Australia, New Zealand and California, they could be viewed as a three-nation triangle of the Sixth Branchrace, embodying the Three Rays of Aspect, 3,2,1 respectively. Therefore, America can be seen as the first branchrace, New Zealand the second branchrace, and Australia the third branchrace - of the Sixth Subrace.

Thus the Americans have become in only three centuries a"primary race," pro tem., before becoming a race apart, and strongly separated from all other now existing races.They are, in short, the germs of the Sixth sub-race, and in some few hundred years more, will become most decidedly the pioneers of that race which must succeed to the present European or fifth sub-race, in all its new characteristics.(20)

The United States fulfills the same office for the sixth or coming subrace, which is the germ race for the future sixth great race…(21)

As America developed, her Aquarian soul quality(22) became more evident on the West Coast. If Los Angeles is the heart centre (Love/Ray Two) of America, then Aquarius and esoteric ruler Jupiter (Ray Two) are in close resonance.

The East Coast retains some of her mother country conservatism that may be reflected by New York as the throat centre, and its Saturn rulership. America’s other centres are Chicago (solar plexus), Washington (head), and Kansas City.(23)

Los Angeles, the “City of Angels” (aptly named for the heart centre), though not yet awakened, shows some glimpses of that destiny. The movie and music industries centered there resonate very strongly with the Fourth Ray of Harmony and Beauty, which corresponds to the fourth centre, the heart.

Los Angeles also acts as an expression of the high Aquarian ideals of America’s Aquarian soul. The West Coast is a leader in spiritual diversity and new technology of a very Uranian and Aquarian character.

Ray Seven is not only associated with Aquarius but also with the Ray Seven subcycle of the 1860s which saw gold rushes in California and her sister nations of the Sixth Subrace, Australia and New Zealand - at exactly the same time. The mineral kingdom resides on the seventh plane and has a close affinity with Ray Seven. The Seventh Ray is also the personality ray of Spain (6/7), and it was the Spanish who explored America earlier on.

Ray Four is also reflected in the racial tensions that exist in Los Angeles, as there is an attempt to synthesise them all, and bring harmony out of conflict, acting as a microcosm for the whole country.

A detailed study of these cities can confirm these factors, although sometimes it is not that obvious because the centre may not be fully awakened or may even be dormant.

1098-1179 – Hildegarde of Bingen - Mystic, healer, “sybil”. Rays 6, 3? German women mystics.

1000-1148 – Golden Age of Hebrew Literature, Kabbalah. (Ray Three Jews/literature) Hasidism (Jewish Mystics).

1190s – Era of the Troubadors - carriers of the Grail message. Rays 4/6. Singers of praise to Mother Mary.

1231-1500s – The Inquisition. Suppression and punishment of ‘heretics’. Characterised by torture and cruelty. Finally suppressed in 1834. Probably the start of Ray Four subcycle that embraced the Flagellants.

1478 – Spanish Inquisition. Worst excesses of previous inquisitions. Spain a Ray Six soul through a Ray Seven personality.

1500s – Ray Three cycle - John Dee 1527-1608 - Mathematics, astrology. Francis Bacon - philosophy, Shakespearean plays.

Ray Five subcycle - Alchemists, Rosicrucians. Bruno, Agrippa, Boehme, Paracelsus.

1640 – Aquarian influence since 1640 AD (start of 500 year cuspal period) - breaking down Piscean Age. (A Treatise on White Magic, p. 619)

1650s – Astrology and astronomy split. Ray Five specialisation and separation.

1700s – Ray Six subcycle. - Wesley 1703-91, Whitefield 1714-70, Molinos 1640-97, Guyon 1648-1717, Methodists (1729- Ray Five?)

1730s – Initiation - past 200 years (from 1930s) - many initiated - entered ashrams of Masters - unforeseen by Hierarchy - rapid but difficult way to be tried.

1825 – Ray Two potency declined. (EP1-349) Peak of outgoing 500 year cycle. (250 years from 1575.)

1860s – Ray Seven subcycle. - Eliphas Levi, HPB and Theosophy, Steiner, Yeats, Golden Dawn, Spiritualism.

1898 – End of first 5000 years of Kali Yuga cycle. Radium discovered. (Rays 1/7.)

RomanticismLate 1700s -1800s. – “In literature and art, the classical intellectual attitude gave way to a wider outlook, which recognised the claims of passion and emotion, and in which the critical was replaced by the imaginative spirit, and wit by humour and pathos.” (Britannica CD 98.)Shelley, Keats, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Carlyle, Emerson, Thoreau. Age of Enlightenment – Scientific materialism. “European intellectual movement of the 17th and 18th centuries in which ideas concerning God, reason, nature, and man were synthesized into a worldview that gained wide assent and that instigated revolutionary developments in art, philosophy, and politics. Central to Enlightenment thought were the use and the celebration of reason, the power by which man understands the universe and improves his own condition. The goals of rational man were considered to be knowledge, freedom, and happiness.”(26)

Victorian Era – (Queen Victoria ruled 1837-1901): “Decency, morality, prosperity, industrial/scientific development, deficient sense of humour, acceptance of authority and orthodoxy.”(27)

The Ray Three cycle is an easy one to see with the historical dates above, and reflects the statement:

“Some idea as to the Mahachohan's cycle of emanatory impulses may be gathered by considering the dates of the foremost scientific discoveries since Plato's time.”(28)

Counting back through two 900-year cycles of Ray Three (1425 AD minus 1800 years), returns to Plato’s time in 375 BC. Plato established his Academy in 387 BC. Ray Three rules philosophy, Plato’s calling at a time when there were also many other philosophers in Greece, a country then conditioned strongly by Ray Three.

The 1425 AD cycle of 900 years for Ray Three reached its outgoing peak in 1875, the half way point of 450 years. Around the year 1879 was also the start of a special Ray Five cycle within a greater Ray Five cycle.

The very tangible effects of Ray Five can be seen in the past 200 years with the Industrial Revolution and the development of communications, computer and space technology. As this Ray comes through the sign Aquarius, it has provided a preview of the possibilities of the 2,160-year Aquarian cycle.

Some of the Ray Five “foremost scientific discoveries” occurred on the peak of the outgoing cycle of Ray Three in 1875. Bear in mind that Ray Three also expresses through culture, commerce, transport, and communications.

Just as fascinating are the leading figures that have come forth from their soul groups, incarnating on specific ray cycles, in accordance with the Greater Plan, they have literally emerged from the soul of the nation.

Inventor James Watt probably came from one of the Ray Five ashrams, incarnating in a Ray Five cycle. William Blake, mystic and visionary upon a Ray Six subcycle; HPB on a Ray Seven/1 subcycle and major Ray Three cycle; and the Christ on the Pisces/Ray Six cycle. All unfolded in accordance with systemic law and karma.

Abraham Lincoln is an example of the consummate Aquarian who came forth (during a Ray Seven/1 subcycle) to liberate his people from slavery. His Aquarian Sun resonates with America’s Aquarian soul. He is also occultly known as a Racial Avatar.(29) Also worth considering in this light:

These three important developments indicate the activity of the third ray during the period of time wherein the Aryan race emerges from the general racial background, develops itself as the generations pass away, and then fades out again as do all the races.By this process the souls which have profited by the experience during racial manifestation pass on into another and higher race, the sixth root race, in this case. (30)

There may be some clues as to the sequence of “ashrams” that have come forth according to ray activity: 2, 7, 4, 6, 5, 3, 1.(31)These could be viewed as subcycles within the Ray Six cycle, or longer. There are 49 ‘ashrams’ on the planet, representing the Seven Ray soul groupings and their subray groups - not all have externalised yet:

We do not know how often [perhaps seven times?] the sub-rays are repeated successively within the cycle of the great ray.It must manifestly be more than once, seeing that the great sixth ray was operating before the rise of Christianity.It is also apparent that Buddhism cannot have been, as was at one time thought, the last outcome of the great second ray period, for the interval between the rise of Buddhism and that of Christianity was only five hundred years.It seems probable that Buddhism [500 BC] arose under the influence of the second sub-ray [500 year cycle] of the great sixth ray period [15,000?].(32)

Disciples from the various ashrams are “guided by invisible hands,” by an advanced disciple, their Master, or Devas. Geoffrey Hodson tells us that well-established nations are presided over by National Devas. They work with the advanced souls of humanity and occasionally send impulses to leading personalities, so that they will act in a manner that will fulfill the nation’s dharma. The National Angel is the summation of the national consciousness--all souls are united by it:

National dharma and karma and consciousness meet and find a single expression in this archangel. Under the Lords of Karma, a national angel is granted a certain amount of latitude and control in the working out of a nation’s karma. It can be concentrated so that portions are paid off quickly, or it can be extended over long periods.

There is complete knowledge by the angel of a nation’s capacity to endure adversity, the amount of karma it is capable of bearing, without suffering serious evolutionary delay. The angel always looks to the future and the fulfillment of the national dharma.(33)

Usually more sensitive artistic souls tap into the incoming cosmic vibrations, particularly musicians, who then “translate” and express a keynote, such as that of a new ray cycle or zodiacal/planetary energy.

This keynote eventually develops into the new culture,(34) which in turn can become a large part of a new civilisation.

Cyril Scott tells us that in the case of the musician Wagner, it was the devas and “lesser National Devas” of the German nation that inspired him to great buddhic heights of expression. Wagner was part of a Ray Four soul group who incarnated as Germany’s many famous musicians, resonating of course with Germany’s Ray Four soul. His time in the mid 19th century corresponds with the Ray Seven subcycle, which has a strong Ray One resonance as well, especially if we consider his contemporaries such as HPB, a Ray One soul.

The period of Germany’s musical genius from approximately 1700-1900 may embrace a Ray Four subcycle of 250 years. (There is a larger Ray Four cycle of over 40,000 years, possibly 44,000) (35)

The Seven Rays can be viewed as seven tones(36)1 or notes--subtones of the major Ray Two of our solar system. These energies can also be perceived as colour.

Recent history demonstrates the different ray expressions of music. For instance, Ray Seven emerging in 1675 can be perceived as the violet seventh subtone of Ceremonial Order.

A new type of polyphony was developed in the seventeenth century, an orderly system of tonality. This music found perfection through Bach, who incarnated on the 1675 Ray Seven cycle in 1685, along with another musician, Handel. The whole emergence of music and the rays constitutes a broad enquiry, and is deeply esoteric.

Taking this Ray Four vibration numerically back in history, consider the teachings of Orpheus about 12,000 BC, who came forth as one who held the Office of the Christ for the Fourth (Celtic) Branchrace of the Fifth Subrace, teaching through sound and music.

Later there is a recapitulation of the Orphean teachings in the Mystery Schools of Pythagoras. It is interesting to note that Master Koot Hoomi who is the future holder of the Office of the Christ, was Pythagoras in a previous incarnation.

The holder of the Office of the Manu comes forth in certain cycles, to incarnate in the various rootraces and subraces, setting the stamp of a racial ideal.

In 747 AD it is said that the Manu incarnated as Padmasambhava, the Lotus Born one, who set about reforming Buddhism in Tibet.(37) Perhaps the respective incarnations of Christ and the Manu were the seeds of the Sixth Branchrace and Subrace.

There are incarnations of the very highest beings in the human kingdom, right across all soul groups, all in perfect sequence and order, intricate as the workings of the wheels in a watch, as humanity plays its part through time.

The other kingdoms in nature all work under these laws. For instance, the vegetable and animal kingdoms are currently going through Kali Yuga cycles with the mass destruction of their forms. This is reflecting the increased impulse of the Shamballa force and is an initiation of sorts:

…the vegetable kingdom is almost as deeply affected through the destruction of vast areas of forests, fields and wide spaces of vegetation…The Shamballa force, thus pursuing its work of destruction, is an aspect of the will and intention of the planetary Logos.(38)

The new civilisations which come into being find new continents in which to “incarnate,” where new nations will be born. It is said that such a continent will eventually arise for the Sixth Rootrace. Cities will appear in these new nations, constituting the energy centres or chakras in the body of the nation, just like the chakras in the body of a human being.

Quite often, these cities are built on ancient power centres that the population naturally gravitates toward, for example in America there are many old Atlantean power centres where modern cities have been erected.

With all countries, bear in mind that it is the soul pattern which eventually supersedes the personality - most nations are still ruled by their personality ray.(39)

The few more advanced souls in any nation will sense the soul ray, for example, Mikhail Gorbachev’s implementation of Perestroika, which expressed the Ray Seven soul of the Russian nation.

All cities and nations have rays and astrological signs ruling them; they all come forth cyclically, and are at different stages of unfoldment:

Some nations are fluid and not properly integrated ... others are integrated entities, or fully expressing personalities; others are crystallised and have nearly run their course as personalities; others again are coming under the influence of their soul ray... a few again are purely embryonic.(40)

Whether it is the adolescent Iraq, the maturing America or the older Great Britain, they are all entities at different stages of growth within the body of the planet. Britain has reached her peak and now other nations like America lead the way.

The Zodiacal signs of a country are determined by its destiny (the future by the rising sign) and its past karma by the Moon. For instance, Australia’s Taurus Moon in its personality chart, echoes the legacy of Britain’s Taurean personality.

Over centuries, nations are reborn several times, as history proves. Capital cities and the decisions made there, reflect the immediate response of a nation’s population.(41)

Nations and capitals are related through their zodiacal rulers and rays. For example, Germany and Great Britain have Ray One of Will or Power as their respective personality rays, and hence Hitler’s resonance with Britain before WWII.(42)

London’s Leo soul links with Berlin’s Leo personality; France’s Leo personality with Italy’s Leo soul. Britain’s Gemini soul links with America’s Gemini personality. The very Leonine Europe represents the “quintessence” of the Fifth Rootrace discussed earlier. Some nations are feminine and others masculine:

It is useful to bear in mind that some nations are negative and feminine and others are masculine and positive.India, France, the United States of America, Russia and Brazil are feminine and constitute the nurturing mother aspect.They are feminine in their psychology,—intuitive, mystical, sensitive, alluring, beautiful, fond of display and colour, and with the faults also of the feminine aspect, such as over emphasis upon the material aspect of life, upon pageantry, upon possession and upon money or its equivalent as a symbol of the form side of existence.They mother and nurture civilisation and ideas.

16. Both King James and Bacon disincarnated in the same year as the withdrawal of the Sixth Ray in 1625 AD. Francis Bacon was an incarnation of the 7th Ray Chohan, Master R, coming in on a major Ray Three cycle which started in 1425, and a Ray Seven subcycle no doubt. Ray Seven of Ceremonial Magic and Ray Three astrological contemporaries were John Dee and Robert Fludd. The Ray Three cycle was also part of R’s preparation to take the post of that Ray Three department, the Office of the Mahachohan, in the 20th century.
