Now – I
by Simon Marlow

We usually think of time as
Fragmented moments, freeze-framed
Strung out like pearls on the necklace of infinity.

The present is non-existent,
Only an interface between
An irrecoverable past
And an unknowable future.

But, look at the past.
Every then was once a now;
Look at the future.
Every then will be a now one day.

Truly, now is all there is –
One eternal present
Through which cycle
The sequence of events we call time.

We usually think of people as
Self-conscious ‘I’s
Fragmented from the whole,
Freeze-framed into personality
Strung out on the web of space.

But everyone throughout the world
And through all time
Says ‘I’, ‘myself’.

Truly, Self – like Now –
Is one enormous whole
Through which progresses
The kaleidoscope of separate egos
Until each
Knows itself as
The eternal One.
