Encounters with Christian Healers,
Mystics, and Sages Manifesting the Plan
For the last twenty five years Kyriacos C. Markides has
been exploring as a participant observer the lives and teachings of Christian
mystics, healers and charismatic monks and hermits. In this lecture he
will discuss his experiences with these extraordinary human beings and
will show us that there is a clearly identifiable experiential mystical
tradition within Christianity that has been practiced for hundreds of years
and yet is little known to Western seekers.
Kyriacos C. Markides, born and raised on the island of Cyprus, has written
six books on contemporary Christian mystics and healers such as The Magus
of Strovolos and The Mountain of Silence. His latest work, Gifts of the
Desert , is forthcoming by Doubleday. Professor Markides has lectured widely
throughout the United States and in other countries and his books are translated
into nine other languages. He has been teaching sociology at the University
of Maine since the early seventies and lives with his wife Emily J. Markides
in Stillwater, Maine.
